Yesterday and today I have been getting my visa renewed. Not that I am being rejected or anything, but it has just been a really long, complicated process to get a stamp and a signature on my passport.

To begin with, the government buildings are only open from 7 am to 1 pm, Monday through Friday. So at 7 am Tuesday, Flo had one of her coworkers pick me up to guide me through this process. I had a vague idea of what I needed to do but no specific instructions. Read the rest of this entry »

After a 7 hour bus ride, on the regular line bus, Dorthea (German), Nathalie (French), and I made it to Filadelfia at the ungodly hour of 5 am. The regular bus, although not as uncomfortable as the city transit buses, was a shock after the Executive bus I took to Buenos Aires. I think Dorthea and I were squeezed into the smallest possible space, we had no legroom, our seats didn’t recline enough to notice any difference, and a friendly roach-like insect greeted us from the seatback to our front once we sat down. No movies. No food. No water… no sleep! It was a long night. Read the rest of this entry »

To start off, click here for some music:

I just got back from Filadelfia. No, I have not seen the Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall, or the playground where the Fresh Prince spent most of his days chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’ all cool, shootin’ some b-ball outside of the school. Read the rest of this entry »

I officially now have, in my hands, 4 tickets for Quilmes Rock 2007. One ticket for each day of the concert. I am so excited. Is it April yet?

Yes, Audioslave is confirmed. This link officially lists the participating bands, but it is broken on the Ticketek.com page (for me at least): Velvet Revolver confirmó su visita a Buenos Aires (Velvet Revolver confirmed their visit to Buenos Aires) Read the rest of this entry »

I realize I haven’t updated in a while, but here I am! I have been busy at work this week and it has been either really hot or raining cats and dogs at night (not very good conditions to go to the cafe or wait for the internet here).

I just got home from a baby shower for one of my co workers. I already uploaded the photos, so check out Flickr. It was really nice, I went with Flo and several of the other girls from work to Morin’s, which is a confiterie/salon de te. So it is a bakery and tea room, it pretty much caters to baby showers so the whole restaurant was full of women and about 30% of them are pregnant. It was a really cute little restaurant in a small old house, and had TONS of different delicious pastries. I haven’t been many/any baby showers at home (thankfully) but here it is more relaxed and less wacky for lack of a better word. We all basically just sat around and chatted for a long time. There were about 5 courses, many of them finer foods. So first we had mini sandwiches, then mini hot sandwiches, then either coffee, hot chocolate, tea, or ice cream (One guess for what I chose!). And then a slice of cake. And then some little bite sized pastries. Yum!

After eating, the guest of honor opened her presents, lots of regular baby stuff (bottles, diapers, baby clothes). After that, we tied all the bows from the gifts together to make a long string. We strung the ribbon around the table so that everyone was holding part of it, snaking it around and around. The person who receives the very end of the ribbon is supposed to be the next person to get pregnant. Guess who got the end??? Not me! It was the other pregnant lady there. Pretty funny.

Last night there was yet another thunderstorm, streets were flooded, crazy downpour. Happens a lot but it is driving me crazy because when it floods you can’t go anywhere. Sol and I were stuck at the gym for 30 minutes after it closed yesterday just waiting for the rain to stop.

Last weekend I sang karaoke for the first time in my life. It was so much fun!!! I went with my friend Jose and we picked out all the best songs to sing… unlike everyone else there. The rest of the singers were belting out really romantic Spanish ballads. Super romantic, sappy love songs. And singing horribly, absolutely awful, because these were basically the “Whitney Houston – I will always love you”s in Spanish.

 We sang:

  • Californication – Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • 3 Little Birds – Bob Marley
  • Peaches – Presidents of the USA
  • and the showstopper, Light my Fire – the Doors

I had tons of fun especially with Light My Fire. We totally rocked out to that one. Plenty of scream-singing. So if you can imagine our songs were quite a contrast from the others but I think that is part of what made it so great.

At work, I am getting busier. Mostly because one of my coworkers is on vacation. Everyone here gets 2 weeks of vacation per year (except me). So a lot of people are on vacation right now in the office.

In other news, dengue is still going around. A teenage girl died from it this week, she didn’t get any treatment from the doctor, went into a coma and died. Ruth had dengue too this week and missed some days at work. Luckily it was not a bad case of it but I feel like I really got lucky since we always go to lunch together so any mosquito that bites her could have bitten me. So right now I am always putting on repellant whenever I go outside.

Other than that there is not really much to report, I have just been working and going to the gym this week.

Tickets are now on sale for Quilmes Rock 2007. Quilmes Rock is a giant 4 day concert in Buenos Aires, on April 12 to 15, with both international and Argentine rock bands headlining once-in-a-lifetime shows. Tickets for all 4 days are as low as $80! (Wow I just reread this and realized it’s just like the blurbs I used to write for Ticketmaster- Click that and check out the righthand column).

Ruth and I are buying our tickets today along with a few of her friends. I am pretty excited about this now but once we actually have the tickets I am going to be going crazy with anticipation. Some of the confirmed bands playing will be Aerosmith, Audioslave, Keane, Velvet Revolver, Evanescence, Placebo, and two other headlining Argentine bands I have not heard of but have interesting names: Las Pelotas (The Balls) and Los Ratones Paranoicas (The Paranoid Mice) There are a lot of rumors about who else is going to play. I’m hoping the Green Day rumor is true. Read the rest of this entry »

Several people in the neighborhood around the office have come down with dengue fever. Great. Just great.

I got some bites yesterday afternoon, after I heard this news. Immediate thought: Perfect, I get to spend the next two weeks in some decrepit hospital battling a fatal illness

I wish I could say I have some amazing stories from this weekend but I really don´t. As I said before, I went with Sol, her boyfriend, her cousin, her brother, and their wives to San Bernardino, aka San Ber. It is about an hour away from Asunción, situated on a rather large and extremely polluted lake. Read the rest of this entry »
